Coconuts are in the limelight these days. From coconut water to coconut milk, everyone just can’t seem to get enough of this wonder food. Though drinking coconut water is the most accessible, let us take a look at four alternative uses for coconut water which rather refreshing (pun intended).
Cooking
Try substituting coconut water for stock or plain water when cooking rice or soup based dishes. For a start, a half-and-half ratio with water will still add great flavour to your food. When you’re ready you can substitute it fully. It’s also a healthy option when making smoothies, as it has more fiber and is lower in calories than juices. Also, have you tried making jelly with coconut water, oh. em. gee!
Skin Care
Did you know that you can wash your face with coconut water? Yep. A widely known clarifying practice in India, coconut water is said to reduce acne, control oily skin and moisturize. As a super-hydrant, coconut water is also antibacterial. It is no wonder that many beauty products use coconut the water as an oil substitute. It’s important to note, however, that fresh, unsweetened coconut water should be used when cleansing.
Hangover Cure
Went a little crazy (as always) and had too much to drink at a great party last night? Fret not-coconut water loaded with potassium (containing slightly more than a banana) and electrolytes will help to make that nasty hangover feel much better. To better safeguard yourself, drink coconut water before you go to bed or use it as a mixer in your drinks. This will preemptively cut down the hangover symptoms.
Weight Loss
Keeping your body hydrated is key if you’re trying to lose weight as dehydration slows down your metabolism. Yes water is the ultimate hydrant, but sometimes we want something refreshing and sweet. Coconut water is low in calories, has zero cholesterol and has very little fat. Another bonus is its high fiber content—much higher than most juices and with a lot less sugar. Though it goes without saying that coconut water isn’t a weight-loss cure-all, it’s helpful in keeping you hydrated and feeling full.
There you have it, four new ways to incorporate coconut water into your life. Coconut water can be enjoyed as a stand-alone beverage or combined with another liquid product. When searching for the perfect fresh coconut to enjoy, be sure to steer clear of those that have a hard brown shell. Instead, look for those that are green on the exterior as they usually contain a large supply of the actual coconut water substance.
